What are neurotoxins?
Neurotoxins is the generic name given to the group of various synthetically created injectables from the Clostridium botulinum species. They work by blocking the release of acetylcholine (a messenger protein) in our nerves, which, in turn, blocks the contraction of our muscles. When injected into our muscles, we will no longer be able to contract those muscles. Neurotoxins can be used in medicine for various therapeutic medical issues such as overactive bladder, cervical dystopia (neck spasms), migraines, and delayed gastric emptying. In aesthetic medicine, we can use neurotoxins to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by facial expressions, simply by injecting our facial muscles. In turn, we can prevent new facial lines and wrinkles from forming as well.
How long do they last?
Once injected into the muscle, it can take anywhere from 3-14 days for the full-effect to settle in. Generally, the effects of neurotoxins will last about 3-4 months. Depending on your lifestyle, neurotoxins could last longer or shorter, and the timeframe may differ slightly for each patient. The more frequently neurotoxins are injected, the duration of action seems to last longer than the usual 3-4 months.
Why are there so many different types?
There are a variety of neurotoxins on the market, with each one being developed by a different manufacturer. This leads to different formulations, protein blends, dosages, etc. Although they are all created a little differently, their mechanism of action and effects are all the same.
